The Breath

The breath acts as a bridge between conscious awareness and unconscious physiological processes, it's the language through which the brain and the autonomic nervous system communicate - each emotional state tends to correlate with distinct breathing patterns. By allowing the body to guide you in how it needs to breathe, and by introducing new breathing patterns over time, you begin to have greater agency with your autonomic nervous system and how it responds to stress, emotion, and stimulation.

We use the breath to up-regulate and down-regulate emotional states, allowing ourselves to connect with where we're at, and influence where we want to go.
The breath is also an anchor in times of emotional turmoil, consciously focusing and steadying it, can help us navigate our inner emotional landscape, supporting awareness without getting overwhelmed and sucked into patterns of overthinking.

Stronger more active breathing techniques are used to help clear our minds and access altered states of consciousness which can aid in emotional processing and facilitate great creativity and insight.

The Breathwork in these mixes draws influence from a range of teachers and traditions, including Pranayama practices, Dan Brule, Wim Hof, Stan Grof, Leonard Orr, as well as many years of personal practice.

The Sound

The soundscapes draw heavily from the innerdance school of thought and the work of Pi Villaraza. The journeys tend to track the 12 stages of awakening as outlined by Pi, which also loosely maps onto Joseph Campbell's work, with the hero's journey.

They're designed to create conscious dream like experiences, combining rhythmic structure, evolving tonal layers, and periods of intensity and stillness to support shifts in attention, perception, and emotional processing.
The rhythms and tonal patterns are structured to move between states of stimulation and rest - engaging sympathetic activation (higher energy states such as Alpha, Beta, and Gamma) alongside parasympathetic activation (rest-and-digest states associated with Theta and Delta brainwaves).

They integrate components of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) and Bilateral Audio Stimulation (via stereo speakers or headphones, supporting cross-hemispheric communication), guiding people through emotional landscapes that can support release, relaxation and integration.

The wave formation of the music also loosely mirrors Sleep Cycles - oscillating between Slow-Wave Delta states (associated with bodily restoration and neural pruning) and REM-like states (associated with memory consolidation and the formation of new neural connections).

The co-activation of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, combined with rhythmic breathing and emotionally evocative music, can help people enter trance-like or flow states. These states are often reported as involving reduced internal dialogue (“no-mind”) and can feel deeply restorative for both mind and body.

Innerdance is an evolving body of work. Over time, the playlists have changed in shape and texture, becoming less recognisable as traditional musical compositions and more like mixed soundscapes - blending sequencers and modular synthesisers with ambient drones and trigger sounds.

The working theory behind this approach is that the brain can become conditioned to repeatedly activate certain emotional states through familiar, emotionally provocative music. These soundscapes are designed to reduce automatic emotional reactivity and encourage greater flexibility within the system. Creating more detachment from specific habitual emotions.

These soundscapes can initially feel chaotic or overwhelming. Over time, however, the brain often adapts by learning to remain regulated while processing multiple stimuli, building neural architecture which can support a greater sense of calm and stability in complex, chaotic or demanding environments.
